Lions complete rally ... with help:
"STATE COLLEGE - Being a college bas ketball coach means enduring unpredict able twists and turns in the course of your job. Especially one who plays a bunch of freshmen. They lose their hair fretting as much over what could happen as what does.
"And yesterday at the Bryce Jordan Center, it all happened to Phil Martelli, caving on him like an avalanche.
"The Saint Joseph's coach watched in helpless, gut-bleeding agony as his young Hawks flapped clumsily off a cliff, blowing an eight-point lead to Penn State with just over a minute to play. ..."

Centre Daily Times | 11/26/2006 | No ordinary Joe:
"UNIVERSITY PARK -- Saint Joseph's coach Phil Martelli said his forward, Ahmad Nivins, was fouled on his way to the basket in the final seconds of Saturday's game. Penn State forward Jamelle Cornley, the man Martelli labeled the guilty party and who was not whistled for a foul, said he doesn't remember the play..."

Doss star Brooks signs with Penn State:
"Doss High School basketball player Jeff Brooks Jr., who became a hot recruit during an impressive summer, now can tell the college coaches to leave him alone.
"During a ceremony at the school Wednesday, the 6-foot-8 Brooks signed a National Letter of Intent with Penn State University.
"'I like their style of play, and their coaches played a major deal into it,' said Brooks, who chose the Nittany Lions over Arkansas. 'They came to see me a lot and came to talk to me about my situation. I just think I picked a perfect situation for myself.'
"Brooks averaged just 11 points and eight rebounds as a junior but impressed coaches at several camps over the summer. He won four MVP trophies at the Blue Chip Camp at Georgetown College and was named the MVP of the Five-Star Camp in Philadelphia. He also had good showings at camps in Nevada, California and South Carolina...."

Scout.com: PSU Hoop Team Lands Top Prospect:
"Penn State's Ed DeChellis was hoping to make some noise on the national recruiting scene during this month's early signing period. And while it happened a bit later than he would have liked — leading to some anxious moments in the Jordan Center — he did just that by landing a top prospect on the next to last day of the period.
"Jeff Brooks, a 6-foot-8, 190-pound small forward from Doss High in Louisville, sent his letter of intent to the Nittany Lions Wednesday.
"Brooks picked Penn State over Arkansas and had offers from a host of schools, including Clemson, Georgia and Virginia Tech. Nearby powers Louisville and Kentucky both showed serious interest but wanted Brooks to wait until the late-signing period before making their offers. ..."

Centre Daily Times | 11/08/2006 | Battle set to sign with PSU:
"He didn't get much attention from most big schools even before he broke his ankle the summer before his junior year, and probably less after that.
"One program, though, kept in touch with Talor Battle throughout. That as much as any reason is why Penn State is set to add one of its most promising recruits in recent memory as college basketball's early signing period begins today.
" 'The other schools weren't really there,' Battle said. '(Penn State was) there even through my injuries and everything.'
"When the ankle healed, Battle, a 5-foot-10, instant-offense guard from Albany, N.Y., averaged 29 points per game during his junior season at Bishop Maginn High School. The Nittany Lions offered a scholarship in February, and Battle accepted with an oral commitment.
"Then came the summer, and the schools who hadn't given Battle much thought began to change their opinions as Battle led the Albany City Rocks to a third-place finish (in a 138-team field) at the 17-and-under AAU national championships in Orlando, Fla.
"Suddenly, Battle -- whose only previous suitors had been Massachusetts and Siena -- was receiving interest from Clemson, Oklahoma, Dayton and Virginia Tech. ..."

Daily Herald | Shooting for the stars: Penn State has its sights set on NCAAs:
"Penn State coach Ed DeChellis had rehearsed his lines, and he showed no sign of deviating from the script.
" 'We are who we are,' DeChellis said Sunday at Big Ten media day for men’s basketball. 'We’re a hardworking group, a blue-collar team and we’re going to continue to play hard.
" 'Our kids believe they can …' DeChellis abruptly paused, like a guard pulling up from 18 feet rather than taking the easy layup.
"In the past, DeChellis could have completed his sentence with goals like 'win a Big Ten road game' or "reach the NIT.' At Penn State, those are usually noteworthy achievements.
"Not now. ..."

Scout.com: Geary Claxton Out for "A Few Weeks":
"A broken knuckle sustained in Wednesday's exhibition win over Edinboro will sideline Penn State's star small forward until the latter part of this month. The Nittany Lions will likely shift to a three-guard attack in his absence."
