Penn State ranks No. 6 in new academic ranking

"The Washington Monthly College Guide":

"The first question we asked was, what does America need from its universities? From this starting point, we came up with three central criteria: Universities should be engines of social mobility, they should produce the academic minds and scientific research that advance knowledge and drive economic growth, and they should inculcate and encourage an ethic of service. We designed our evaluation system accordingly...

"Given our very different way of measuring success, we suspected that the marquee schools routinely found at the top of U.S. News's list might not finish at the very top of ours—but even we were surprised by what the data revealed. Only three schools in the 2006 U.S. News top 10 are among our highest-ranked: MIT, Stanford, and the University of Pennsylvania. In addition, while the private colleges of the Ivy League dominate most rankings of the nation's best colleges, they didn't dominate ours—only Cornell and the University of Pennsylvania made our top 10, and Princeton (tied with Harvard for the top slot on U.S. News's list) was all the way down at #44, a few slots behind South Carolina State University.

"Our list was also more heavily populated with first-rate state schools (the University of California system scored particularly well) than that of U.S. News, which has no public universities within its top ten. UCLA finished second in our overall ranking, UC-Berkeley third, Penn State University sixth, Texas A&M seventh, UC-San Diego eighth and the University of Michigan tenth. Each of our highest-rated schools are, by any reasonable national measure, academically serious schools. But they are not the super-elite—the Harvards and Yales—that normally dominate lists of the nation's “best” universities..."

HoJo a free agent:

"ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico coach Ritchie McKay dismissed transfer forward Aaron Johnson from the program on Sunday, citing an undisclosed violation of team policy.

"``All we can do as coaches is to provide an opportunity for young men to achieve their goals,'' McKay said in a statement. ``However, when you are working with this age group, sometimes decisions are made that warrant the removal of that opportunity, at least as it exists in our program.''

"The 6-foot-9 Johnson, who transferred from Penn State in May, was expected to sit out next season under NCAA transfer rules. He would have been eligible to play as a senior during the 2006-07 season.

"Johnson led the Big Ten last season by averaging 9.9 rebounds. His 24 rebounds in a win over Western Carolina, 20 against Sacred Heart and 21 against Northwestern made him the only NCAA player last season with multiple games of at least 20 rebounds.

"``I was looking forward to having Aaron as a part of our team for the next two years, but there is a standard of expectation that we have set for our student-athletes,'' McKay said. ``At this time he is unable to meet that standard.''

Cincinnati Enquirer: Power forward commits to Xavier

Penn State was reportedly interested in Drew Lavender. Might losing him have cost us another? - .ed

Sports digest:

"Jason Love needed only a couple of dinners to decide that Xavier University, one of the frontrunners for the 6-foot-8 power forward, was the place he wanted to play college basketball.

"Love, a senior from Abington Friends (Pa.) School, orally committed to Xavier University Sunday after his weekend visit to the school.

" 'I felt it was the right time to make a decision,' said Love, who also considered Penn State, Providence, Virginia and La Salle. 'Going to dinner with the players, though, that pretty much sealed the deal.'

"Love went to dinner with Xavier freshman Derrick Brown on Friday night. Then on Saturday, he went out to dinner with Drew Lavender, a transfer from Oklahoma who is ineligible to play this season because of NCAA transfer rules.

"Love said he had not planned on committing to Xavier before he made the trip to Cincinnati. Once at XU, he began to change his mind. ..."

Post-Gazette: High School Notebook: Secret is out at Jeannette

High School Notebook: Secret is out at Jeannette:

"The coaches at Jeannette weren't trying to keep Terrelle Pryor a secret.

"They simply tried to downplay him, trying not to put too much pressure on a teenager. They believed too much attention isn't good for a freshman or sophomore.

"But word is out. Too many people have seen Pryor's athleticism, promise and potential. Too many know Pryor could well be the next two-sport standout in Western Pennsylvania.

"Pryor is a 6-foot-6, 215-pound sophomore at Jeannette High School. He is a quarterback and defensive end on the football team. He is a forward on the basketball team.

"Everyone from opposing coaches to fans are talking about him. Even Jeannette's coaches know there is no more hiding Pryor.

"'I've made a conscious effort to try and downplay him,' Jeannette basketball coach Rick Klimchock said with a laugh. 'But he does have the potential to be a great two-sport star.'

"Jeannette football coach Ray Reitz said: 'I'm not knocking any other players. I saw [West Allegheny's] Dorin Dickerson play and he's a heckuva player. But Terrelle is as good of an athlete as Dickerson. This kid is as good as anybody.'

"Pryor has a lofty national reputation. After playing well in AAU basketball for the Pittsburgh J.O.T.S. this summer, he is rated one of the top 15 sophomores in the country by three scouting services. Scout.com ranks him No. 8. Basketball coaches from Pitt, Penn State, North Carolina State, Xavier, Michigan and Rutgers have called Klimchock to let him know they're interested. Reitz said Pitt coach Jamie Dixon was at Jeannette's football game Friday. Pryor averaged 16 points a game as a freshman last season..."
