"STATE COLLEGE - Jeff Brooks' mother, Phyllis, is a registered nurse who works in a convalescent home in his hometown of Louisville, Ky. As the Penn State freshman forward tells it, she is not one to mince words anyway.

"But in a Friday conversation with her son at the end of what's been a disappointing season for him, she asked a pointed question, the type many PSU hoop fans might have asked if they had the chance:

"'Jeffrey, why do you think every time you make a move?'..."
